Drinking Korean pear juice before alcohol consumption could keep hangover symptoms at bay, say researchers

This guy looks like he could use some Asian pear juice.

From coffee to cold showers, everyone has a hangover cure that he or she swears by. A new study from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization suggests that drinking pear juice before going out for a night of partying could actually prevent some misery the next day. Specifically, the study suggests Korean pear juice is the ticket to a hangover-free morning-after.

“It appears that the factors in Korean pears act on the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or inhibition of alcohol absorption,” Manny Noakes, lead researcher on the project, told the International Business Times. “In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption."

In other words, Asian pears have the seemingly magical ability to reduce the enzyme that leads to headaches and nausea. Drinking pear juice actually had the most pronounced effect on study participants’ concentration levels, one of the hangover symptoms tested. This is a preliminary study, so nothing is set in stone, but you might want to stock up on pear juice before this weekend just in case.

Just like a blood moon, a beer this unique only occurs once every few years. If you had the 12 Fills in 2019, you might remember having an early taste! We are pleased to present this sour to you now (in all its glory!) after barrel aging in French oak for one year. We used our famous brettanomyces & lactobacillus cultures combined with fresh raspberries and after a full trip around the sun, there&rsquos a nice dry finish and subtle notes of oak.

fill 1 = French Oak Barrel Aged Blood Moon Raspberry Sour &ndash 7%

It has been hailed as Canada&rsquos most iconic treat with the first known recipe traced to a 1952 &ldquoWomen&rsquos Auxiliary of the Nanaimo Hospital&rdquo cookbook. In beer form it is a malty amber ale with a balanced blend of cocoa, almond, vanilla and toasted coconut. We hope it will provide the same delicious comfort as the famous Vancouver Island dessert.

fill 2 = Nanaimo Bar Ale &ndash 5%

Love thy neighbour! It's easy to do. especially when your neighbour is an amazing local distillery. We teamed up with our friends at Odd Society to create this creamy, nutty, malty, and smoky ale. It's been infused with Madagascar vanilla and was aged in a whiskey barrel for two months! It's boozy, balanced, and a beautiful reminder of the magic that happens when we connect with fellow creators in our community.

FILL 3 = Odd Society Whiskey Barrel Aged Vanilla Ale &ndash 7%

If gardening became your new Covid hobby, you'll definitely appreciate this special brew! James grew and picked a blend of hops from his personal East Van garden where he spent a lot of downtime during the pandemic. This wild, funky, and complex brew has been aging since September and is now ready to be enjoyed by both greenthumbs and those who can't keep a single houseplant alive.

FILL 4 = Farmhouse Fresh Hopped IPA - 7%

The holidays are just around the corner and this beer is sure to get you into the festive spirit! We used key ingredients from the classic winter concoction including molasses, cinnamon, and butter clarified with rum. The end result is a sweet and creamy amber ale that's perfect for sipping while watching your favourite Christmas movie.

Fill 5 = Walton's Buttered Rum Ale &ndash 6%

Imagine a barrel used for aged gin, then filled with honey for one year, then refilled with gin, and then we got our hands on it! We aged this rich, bright, dry hopped IPA in this very special Odd Society barrel for two months then added macerated whole haskap berries. Medium bitterness. Subtle sweetness. Juniper notes and a tart finish. One of the - dare we say - fanciest IPA's we've ever created.

Fill 6 = Odd Society Gin and Honey Barrel Aged Haskap

Not sure about you, but we get by with a little help from our friends! We teamed up with our pals at Greenhill Cider to create this special holiday treat. We blended a malty ale with semi dry cider and infused it with ginger, clove and nutmeg. It can be enjoyed cold, but we recommend heating it up in a pot on the stove. Pour yourself a cup and facetime, call, text, @, or email a friend you've been missing this year for full joyful benefits.

Fill 7 = Greenhill Mulled Apple Ale &ndash 7%

Classic cocktail meets beer with a seasonal twist! Infusing an amber ale with oranges, cranberries, and whiskey might seem a bit crazy for most breweries. but then we also added wormwood as the bitter because, well, we're Storm. Would you expect anything less?!

Fill 8 = Cranberry Old Fashioned Ale - 5%

We're fairly confident you've never had a barley wine quite like this. Why wine? Due to the alcoholic strength, which is closer to wine than beer. But remember, this is made with grain not fruit. This strong beer has been barrel aging since (drumroll please. ) 2016 and features a sweet flavour with a subtle brett sourness balanced with oak tannins. Swirl it around in your glass &ndash we won&rsquot judge! If you had 12 Fills back in 2017, you would have enjoyed the 1 year aged version.

Fill 9 = 2016 French Oak Barrel Aged Brett Barley Wine &ndash 11%

How did you spend quarantine? Baking sourdough, gardening, making Tik Tok videos?! This imperial oatmeal stout spent several weeks self isolating in a whiskey barrel from Odd Society. It's been tested (for deliciousness) and is now ready to re-enter the world with a solid smoky profile, subtle notes of coconut, and a nice booze to beer balance.

Fill 10 = Odd Society Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout &ndash 10%

For some, 2020 may have felt like one long extended hangover. We don't have the cure (we're only "mad scientists" after all) but we hope this beer might help! We've added fresh orange and pomegranate juice to this easy drinking pilsner, then dry hopped it with rosemary. Cheers to 2021 and congratulations on getting through such a wild year. Storm loves you!

Fill 11 = Pomegranate Rosemary Mimosa Pilsner &ndash 5%

No spoilers necessary. it's our special 25th Anniversary release! Brewed in 2017 and aged in French oak barrels, this lambic uses one of James' infamous recipes from 1996.
